Headers for a stock '77 L-48???

OK,guys,go easy on a fairly new Vette owner...actually give it to me straight,I can take it. Do I need shorty headers? And will I make a big mistake not usin' the coated ones? I see in Summit's catalog,they list "standard" Hedman headers at $119.95,Dynomax at $99.95,and Summit brand at $79.95 |eek|

What do you guys use or recommend?Are there any installation problems I need to know about,or do they bolt rite up? Thanks for your expertise and experience! |cheers|

Jet-Hot coated headers are the way to go, lifetime Rust warranty. I got my 75 with old headers(read trash) that were paper thin because of the rust, car would get 120+ F inside, one of the headers blew out and I replaced with Jet-Hot coated Hooker headers($600) make sure to tell them you're VetteRegistry.net or Corvetteforum member because that is good for...5% or 20% I can't remember, about 45$ on my headers. Anyway, the temperature dropped 25-30degrees(actually nice to drive now) and the sound is much quieter. If you're looking for very cheap headers I have no real advice since I didn't spend much time looking at anything non-coated. I put full length headers on my car, but didn't do the work. Ran into a few problems with lengths but nothing major. If you're replacing stock manifolds you might want to go shorty headers, but I'm not even sure that they align properly if you do. My final answer. Jet-Hot Coated!

Not sure what your goals are. If you are just replacing the exhaust manifold, the shorty or block huggers probally will sufice, and be the most econominal, and we go up from there. Like the previous post, the coated are nice, they go from a wrap that insulates you can do, to ceramic coated, also very good to the ultimate Jett Hott. Price goes up with quality. Them you go to full lenght headers, again base stlye, gauge and straight metal. Header size also is a consideration, if your engine is stock you will most likely want to stay with the smaller size, as the larger will be to free flowing and not get any scavagening effect. I'm not sure on the availability of the exhaust system that you can purchase that would directly bolt to headers and run to the rear without some modifications. The of course there are side exhaust, again several choices, either factory style or "hot Tube" like Hookers. My factory style side-exhaust have Heddman short style headers, into the side pipes, and the Hookers come with the headers included with the side exhaust. Hope your not more confused now that when I started |laugh|

I see Jeg's has Dynomax Cerama-coat headers for $229.99.But I wonder if saving money with the standard non-coated header,then using a product like www.techlinecoatings.com would work just as well? Their product supposedly is good to 2000* F,& is $20 for a set of headers.You can pick up the standard Dynomax at Summit for $99.95. |headscratch|

I don't know much about the DynoMax ceramic coatings. Jet-Hot is substantially more expensive(bout double what you're talking about). However, if you intend to keep the car, never worrying about rust again. Made it worth it to me.

Well,I cant see spendin'$600 on headers,specifically rite now,due to my financial situation at the moment.So I may try the Dynomax product.I also have to complete the dual exhaust on the front 3rd near the manifold.

Jon, I just put shorty headers on my 82. I got them from century performance in calif. They are coated and cost me around $300 including shipping. I had to have the front y pipe modified as the headers are block hugger type. I also had my mech take off the smog stuff. It really made a difference in the pick up and seems to run a little cooler also.

Jon - If I were you I'd consider the Jet-Hot coated headers. They not only keep rusting to a minium, but also reduce heat somewhat, and most of them have a lifetime rust warranty.

I'd also consider long tube instead of shorty's ...

I got the Jet-Hot coated "Super Competition Series " Hooker headers for our '81 and am real satisfied with them.

I would recommend the Hedman ceramic coated. I have them on my 72 and they perform well with reduce engine bay heating. Run them through a good at least 2 1/2 exhaust and free flow mufflers. Nice thing about this set-up is you can reduce noise by using a cross-over tube. |saluteflag|
