My 1980 has been sitting since 92. I have started a frame off rebuild and need some insight on the gas tank. New tanks seem to be quite rare so I need to clean the old one. What is the best way and product to get all the varnish and other assorted heebie jeebies out of there. The body will be coming off this week.

I'm sorry to inform you that there is no known cure for the heebie jeebies .
Your tank should have a "bladder" inside. It's a rubber-like liner that fits inside the tank, supposedly to keep the tank form rusting as bad as the older ones. The only problem with that is, the bladder doesn't survive very well, either!
The fuels & additives attack it over time, and it can deform to the point where you can't even get any fuel in it. 
I don't know of any suitable product for cleaning the inside of one of these.(someone else might, tho) You can, however, remove the bladder, and theoretically have a "good as new" tank inside.
