Got another one of them novice-type questions........I've replaced my gas tank and rubber hoses and flushed the lines with compressed air to remove debris. Obviously, there's not a trace of fuel left anywhere in those lines. Would "priming" them with fuel using a syringe device be advisable before start-up? My main goal is to minimize stress to the starter and battery. Anybody out there do this?

You won't put that much stress on the starter,if all your connections are tight, and your fuel pump is in good shape, the gas should come up to the carb with no problem.if the carb still has gas in the fuel bowls, the engine should fire up momentarily, and that should be enough to get the gas up to it.If it still wont start ,take off the air cleaner, and pour a small amount of gas down the throat of the carb, have a friend turn the engine over and you stand by with something like a rag or shop towel just in case the engine backfires through the carb,it does happen occassionally,it should fire up and run fine.In the old days ,when I was young and foolish,we would just rap our lips around the gas hose and suck on it till we got a mouth full of gas,but the old leaded gas tasted better than the new unleaded does

Ok, so it's the ol' lawnmower trick. Thanks, Ron....I thought it would be a big deal getting gas back up to the engine if the lines were dry. The pump's fairly new.

I started a brand new engine on new empty lines, it only took a second for the fuel to arrive.

Jredding,

I just put on a rebuilt carb ('69 L-46 Q-Jet) & a new fuel line set (pump to carb) last weekend.  Don't forget that gravity will help you out.  Once you get some gas in the tank, it will flow to the pump.  I had a nice stinky leak (attached garage = po'd wife) from the pump until I was able to get the new line from the pump fully tightened.

Despite having an empty carb & filter ('68's have a full-size filter between the pump & carb), my car started right up.

I had a much harder time starting the car with the old carb (not original Q-Jet).  It completely bled out between starts and I had to crank the starter pretty good to get it started.

My bet is that your's will start up pretty quick.

Good luck,

Anthony

Easier way......use a baby medication syringe, fill the carb bowl through the vent tube. About 7 times filling the syringe will fill it enough to start the engine on the second turn if everything is ok......this works great!!!

I just pour a small amount of fuel down in the carb.  The engine starts right up.  If it stalls, pour a bit more, and fire it up again.  When the fuel gets there, it will keep running.
