Hey Everyone,

Had a very weird thing happen to me at the gas station yesterday.  First of note, I have replaced my gas cap with one that you don't have to remove to put gas in.  So, started to fill up as normal, holding the handle.  When it clicked I released the handle and started to pull out the nozzle.  Immediately gas started fountaining up out of the gas tank through the cap.  Needless to say I got covered!  There was quite a bit that came out.  It has never done that before on a fill up.  Almost seemed like there was pressure inside the tank pushing the gas out.  Any ideas on what might have caused it?  I am almost dreading my next fill up.

Thanks,

Dennis

The only thing I can think of is if the fill nozzle was a relative tight fit into the gas cap fitting, that could have built up pressure.

If you have never had this happen before replacing the fuel cap, then you are definitely pressurizing the tank as you put fuel in. Air has to escape from somewhere....usually out the fill tube. The new cap is sealing too well, and not venting the air as the fuel goes in. The tank is designed to be a sealed unit, and vented as needed thru the fuel evap system. Sorry to say, you're likely going to have to re-install your factory style fuel cap, or...remove the "no touch" cap when you put fuel in, making it kinda useless....🙁

Go back to your old gas cap.

Cap has been on there for 4 years now without an issue but yes, it might be time to replace it.

You may need to check your evap system for a clogged hose, or bad purge solenoid. If you do not have the Factory Service Manual for your car, I can send you a diagnostic chart.

I do have a factory service manual so will take a look and see if there is an issue with those components.  Thanks!!
