A couple of years ago my father in law and I installed the 2.5" chambered system from Mid America on my '70 in the driveway using jackstands only. It bolted right up ot the stock manifolds. The only issue was the stock exhaust clamp at the trans crossmember...it's made for 2" pipe. We had to cut it to get the pipes through the crossmsmber, then I took it to a muffler shop and had the guy fab up new brackets to keep it from rattling around. |
That is strange. I just had a 2.5" exaust installed this fall. It fit fine. I would think that The crossmember would be the same size on any frame. The LT-1s and the 454s used a 2.5" exhaust. Do you think it was a 2.5" inside dia. because of it being chambered?

The crossmember is the same on all of them and the pipes fit through with no problems, it was the clamp that created the issue.

It's not just the clamps - the hanger that mounts above the two holes in the crossmember is different for 2.5" pipes. I had my original one (2" or 2.25") swapped out with a 2.5" (GM Part) when I had my exhaust done on my 69.
