Just installed a new Eldelbrock 600 cfm manual choke carb on my 350. Started right up but is idling at 2500 rpm. All of the idle adjustments on the linkages are back all the way OFF. PO had the vacumm advance for the distributor tapped of the manifold , not the carb Question, is the vacumm ok connected to manifold or should in come of the carb. I'm thinking it should come from the carb. I have found other hises miss connected like the wiper door. How do I get a lower RPM idle ?? Will connecting dist to carb do this?? BUBA lived .Also found that carb was connected to vapor canister , but all lines from canister are disconnected All pollution. contrôlée, smog pump, tubes , etc have been removed Thanks, could timing also be contributing to the high rpm? Big AL

Check the adjustment for the manual choke.
If the idle speed adjustment screw is backed all the way out, the engine shouldn't idle at all. What you may have is a huge vacuum leak. What kind of intake is it, are you using an adapter? I'd be looking for a mis-matched gasket, at this point....Ouch

Disconnect and plug the vacuum line after the white inline filter.  That will eliminate your vacuum system and any leaks it may have.  Then see how it idles.  I think most of us use manifold vacuum off the base of the carb for our vacuum advance.  Also, there is probably a line that goes from your PVC valve to somewhere on your carb.

Is your vacuum advance currently coming off the fitting for the power brake booster/headlight system?

Also, when you say manual choke, do you mean mechanical choke or manual with a knob in the cockpit so you can pull it for choking the carb?

Vacuum line for the dizzy should come off the timed vacuum port off the carb.

One thing worse than people talking about you is people not talking about you ..

UPDATE. Blocked of all vacuum lines from carb and manifold with exception of vacuum advance from carb to distributor, and manifold to transmission modulator . ALL else has been plugged . STill high RPM s. A little lower than before , but still at 2000. SO I'll plug the transmission connection and see what happens . REMEMBER this was a "BUBBA" car, wondering about the intake manifold bolts and or gaskets. WHat is torque on manifold bolts ???? I removed carb , installed a new gasket between Eldelbrock carb and Ebelbrock Preformer manifold using a Edelbrock supplied new gasket . What is torque on carb studs ??? Many Thanks AL

Intake bolts should be 35 ft/lbs...not sure on carb bolts, off-hand....

PROBLEM solved. TORQUED Manifold bolts , they were Ok , Called EDELBROCK tech center. Primary throttle plate was not closing fully . Solution. MUCH stronger return spring on throttle cable. Sometimes solutions are easy . SAVE THE WAVE. Now onto the next problem Thanks to all Big AL

But...why? You shouldn't need a spring any stronger than stock, unless the linkage is binding, or one of the throttle plates is a bit off-centered. If this was/is a new carb, then maybe I can see a problem like that, until it gets worn in a bit, and things loosen up.
No matter....as long as it is running well now....Good Job!Thumbs Up

Brand new carb. However , since BUBBA had the wrong carb and linkage on the car , I can only assume that the spring on the car WASNOT original and something he found in a junk drawer . Amy way , yes it is running Big. Al
