a incorrectly functioning or wrong size Alternator, affect the operation of the AC?

Can't think if any way it could.  The running of alternators, a/c and power steering is all determined by the size of pulleys.  Unless the pulleys are the wrong size I can't think of any reason it wouldn't work properly unless it's broken.

To explain a bit further...

 New Alternator went bad after 3 weeks.  Found out besides being a cheap foreign replacement, it was also one for a non-AC car.

 My AC wasn't working, again, before it went bad but I hadn't needed it nor had the time yet to troubleshoot it.

 Oh well, new part is at home I'll throw it on and look at the AC when I'm done. Working out of town this week. Back home for the weekend and then on Wednesday, I'm off to Germany.

A/C cars did have a higher amp alternator. It's needed for the extra voltage/amperage draw for the clutch on the compressor. If the clutch magnet does not have the proper voltage, it will slip, and eventually burn the clutch(and pully) up. A/C cars also had four fan speeds, instead of three, for the non-A/C cars.
Wha problem were you having with the A/C, anyway?

Doesn't switch on....clutch doesn't even engage. No click, nothing.

 I need to Blacklight it when I have time to see if it's leaking but the Alternator goes in on Friday night.

This may be an elementary question but are you sure you have 12 volts and a good ground? Is there a fuse under the hood in line to your compressor...

I'll know more for sure once I get the new Alternator in on Friday. I had one of my turn indicator dash lights on for some reason...

 I hate electrical stuff...  It's gonna be warm in PF ...gotta stay cool !

Oh, come on, Jim!! I'm not gonna have time to rebuild my A/C compressor before PF, so I'll be toughin it out!! But, then again...Mama's Cad has COOOOOLD air!!!

Yeah, you need to verify the refrigerant charge on it first. Then go with the 'lectrical crap. You should have a large, red wire, with an inline fuse holder, going across the top of the firewall. That is the power for the high speed blower. I'd have to check the wiring diagram for your year, but I think yours will have this type system. That would be the easiest thing to check, as far as 'lectrical. Then it gets a little more involved.
Check the refrig. charge , and let us know where it is.

The comp. gets it's power from the switch in the console. That switch gets power from the fuse panel, so, check fuses first.Adams' Apple38861.8565856482
