A factory air cleaner does not have open holes. Without knowing which system you have, I guessing that one of the holes is for a breather filter for a PCV system air intake going to a valve cover. Not the same as the vacuum line from the PCV valve. The other one may be an air dump for an A.I.R. system. On rapid decell warm the system can divert air to the air cleaner instead of the exhaust. A carburator car goes rich on decell, and the air (O2) in the exhaust makes it backfire in the pipes.

Does it have functional Cowl Induction? If so you will find a flap at the back of the hood. It may be a filter lid for Cowl Induction if you don't have it.

Are you talking about 2 holes in the top of the two snorkles of the air cleaner housing? If so, vacumn operated valves go there to shut the snorkles to outside air to help warm up the motor faster by pulling hot air off the exhaust manifold through a flex pipe. Mike
