82 ce rough

Have a 82 ce and have been working on cel error 44 and a battery light.  After I got the battery light to go off and the alternator working correctly, Started the engine and everything seem to be running correctly, all error lights off I put the car in it started running rough and smoke.  The only way I could keep the car running was to increase the RPM.  Prior to this the car ran just fine.  In Need of help.
