We recently purchased our '77 coupe. We live south of Kansas City, Mo. and I have a question on the emission system. It appears, from various publications, that 1977 Corvettes had an external Air (Smog) pump. Is this correct or is it internal? I didn't think this was absolutely required till after 1981.

I can't find any evidence that one had ever been installed. I've looked for various mouting brackets or belts. I've even looked for plugs in the exhause headers without success. |frown|

As I understand it, Missouri requires all polition devices be installed and working before the state inspection sticker be issued

This could set my enjoying the car back till I find/install all the missing pieces. |ick|

Assistance is appreciated..

Thanks

Jim, yes your 77 should have been equpiied with an A.I.R. pump. It should be on the right front of the block in front of the valve cover. There should be a "pipe" assembly into the manifold. If there isn't I would suspect that everything was removed. There should be some wires in there somewhere to show that something was hooked up.
Hope this helps
Chris

lucky for you these items are being reproduced and are avaiable from most corvette suppliers (zip, corvette central as well as others) even the exhaust manifolds. i can recall spending months searching swap meets trying to find exhaust manifolds for my restorations.
