I have a 1970 couple, 454, 4 speed.
It has an annoying habit of spilling coolant out the overflow tube
after driving for a while, then parking. This seems to only happen
after turning off.
This car is configured with the separate expansion tank mounted
on the fender well. The tank and cap have been replaced.
When driving, even on a cool day like yesterday, low 40's, I noted
the temp gauge sitting at about 215 or 220. I don't recall seeing
it getting much higher on warmer days though it's been a while
since I've driven this car regularly.
It seems odd the overflow would happen after shutting down.
Has anyone else had the same experience? Is this a common
flaw with the big blocks? I could put a recovery tank on but it
seems like a patch to treat a symptom.

as far as i know that would be the only solution is the recovery bottle. when you shut car down water gets hotter as it is not floowing and expands more. probably common no matter what size engine.
