Wow, ok, lots of information....Leather is completely unfixable once cracked? that's really a shame, but since i don't mind how it looks too much, i guess i won't worry about it....my driver's sead does slide foward a little under heavy braking...is this normal or is something else broken, and is it critical?? neither shoulder harness stops until the belt is all the way extended but the lap belt hardly extends...is this hard to fix?

Vette(s): 1979 Black coupe. 11256 original, documented, miles on it when I bought it in April of 2000. It now has 13100 on it. Oyster interior, like new. Everything original, everything works, except the clock. Paint has a couple of minor flaws.

Sounds like your seat adjuster is out of wack. You need to get that fixed, cause it might make you have a wreck. There is a geared slider shaft, and the handle has teeth on it, that fit in the geared shaft. Either the handle, or the shaft is stripped, or out of adjustment. Probably the best way to work on it, is to remove the seat, and turn it upside down, and go to work.

I'm pretty sure that the seatbelts have a gravity lock on them. When you apply the brakes, they lock up. You might test them as you are going down the road. When the coast is clear, hit the brakes hard, and see if the seatbelt holds you back in the seat. If it doesn't , they don't work, and should be fixed. I'm a sound believer in seat belts and air bags. They save a lot of lives.

What you're saying is that sitting in the car my girlfriend couldn't lock the shoulder strap if she tried and the only way it will work is if the brakes are being applied(heavily?) so i should check and make sure that works, but it won't be testable unless moving? Interesting If True.

In the interest of NOT taking my seats out of my daily driver, at least not yet(tired of the |cussing| bus)...could I just gently shove a wedge under the seat so that it stays in one spot? Go bubba...lol...just no time to be pulling seats this week..

That seat and belt situation scares me Scot. Try to get them fixed as soon as possible.

And...while you have that drivers seat out, if the passenger set is in better condition, switch the tops and bottoms over! You'll get more wear that way! And like I said, get some seat covers if the tears start catching on things. You can find some really nice one's out there these days. From all the catalogs, and online, and try ebay! Post what you're looking for here and on other Vette forums and I'll bet you can find good one's. Also a good resource for used parts. If you want a list of all the forums that I go to, let me know! lol One guy I know even had his signature purple flames put on his and they look really cool! Under a hundred bucks for both, buying and having them done at a local upholsterer. If you have any friends or your parents know anyone in that business, check on it. If they don't bother you, don't bother! lol

Scot, the problem with the belts is probably the retractor. There is a little plunger like looking thing in there that hangs perfectly vertical. When it does this, the betls are free to move, When it comes off of being vertical it forces a "pin" to lock into the retractor teeth and stop it from moving. i agree with the rest, you should get them fixed, they aren't safe.
Check out www.ssnake-oyl.com this is what they do, restore belts and retractors.

I just went for a short drive, and while I was out I checked the seatbelts, and mine work by hitting the brakes hard, but you don't need to lockem up, otherwise they just slip. Like you said, you can lean into them all day long, and they won't do anything...They have an inertia switch on them...
