Mike is right on (as well as Joel). My '70, as well as all others, have a 4 after the S. The fourth position changes from a 3 to a 6 for verts.
Nope. The 4 after the plant code (S) is correct and stands for the car line series code and is (technically) part of the consecutive unit number. All 70s have the 4 in this position; it was 4 for the '68s, a 7 for the '69s; a 1 for the 71s, etc.
