They should respond and steer very crisply. If it does not there can be several reasons. The most common is the adjustment or failure of the power steering valve. You may also find worn steering or suspension parts. If you really want tight steering install a rack and pinion conversion. While many love the conversion, I'm happy with the original steering in proper operating condition.

By the way, the only dumb question is the one you don't ask.

Regarding the loose steering, two things could be causing your problem. One, check the arch on your rear spring. If it has flattened out some, your yokes are probably worn out inside your differential. That will make the rear steer the front. I had mine checked for the same problem and found about 3/8" worn off the yokes. Replacing them helped a bunch. The final thing that took care of the problem was to replace the rag joint on the steering shaft next to the steering gear box.

Looks like I may be taking the plunge on a 79. I'm having a mechanic go over the car today. I already know it needs paint and AC doesn't work but if the other mechanicals are OK I'm joining the club.

I'm in the club. 79 White/Black needs a good paint job, AC and some TLC but otherwise not a bad car. The car is in FL and I'm in NJ so I'm arranging shipment. I should know by end of tomorrow what the shipping shedule looks like. I'm hoping have the car in 2-3 weeks.
