Just in case you haven't heard it before, when towing a car, always mount the trailer nose first. Never "BACK" a car on to a trailer. Bad weight distibution.

Just last month I towed my red 79 L-82 4-speed on a trailer from Tennessee to Florida with my Durango. I would not cover the car as the wind will whip it and rub the paint. Good mud flaps on the truck will prevent stone chips.
If you are renting from U-Haul the tie down nets that go over the wheels work great and are supplied with the trailer.

Also the fenders on the trailer fold down so you can open the door and get out after the car is on the trailer. Good luck. Have a safe trip.
