Title Question

Is a title of much importantance on a car over 25 years old? I’m planning on looking at a Vette this week with low miles and I’m told in very good condition. Good price. It was a bank repo and I’m not sure what the deal is on the title, or if I will get one at all. I only need a bill of sale to put it on the road here. How important is a title, even if it’s an older one, when looking to buy a C3?  Thanks, Jeff

Having a title is important for any car. Even if your state isn't a title state, what if you sell the car later on to someone from a title state? It makes it much more sellable to someone when they know you have a clear title.

Having a title also lets someone know that YOU are the legal owner of the car, and it's not a salvage car.

Some people also try to sell without a title as the car has officially been "totaled" by the local DMV. The car is somehow miraculously resurrected and they try to avoid discussing the "junk(yard) title"...

Gunslinger is right. A legitimate title is very important, even if you live in a no-title State. You may be able to sell the car in your State or even sell to an out-of-state buyer but it becomes a major pain when the buyer tries to register the car in his home State. It can also make it difficult if the car should ever end uo in probate. There are companies that provide  titles for a fee. But buyer beware, because some States will not recognize them as legititmate. The good part is, If the car was originally purchased and titled in  state that requires it you can probably have a title company do a records search and get a good title.

Thanks to Gunslinger, LukesVette and ranger3 for your answers to my question. Looks like everyone is in complete agreement on this one. The guy with the car I was referring to will not answer his phone or return my calls now. Maybe he thought I was smarter than I really am. If it's gone just say so.  Sounded too good to be true and it probably was. 
I was take your information to heart as I continue my search.
Now that I think about it, I still have the title for a 41 pickup I've had since about 1970.

I was told this past weekend that effective yesterday, the the state of NC will require a title for any car that is being sold for salvage. With the price of scrap metal now at over $9 per 100lbs, it seems lots of cars that were left beside the road for any length of time were being stolen and sold to the salvage yards.
