I'm getting a loud screeching sound from my tach. I thought it was the cable but somebody mentioned that I may need to rebuild the tach. Any tips on how best to narrow down the problem would be appreciated.

Disconnect the cable from the tach and fire it up. If it quit, repair the tach, if it changes or continues, lube or replace the cable.

If the screech is from under the hood, you may have a cross shaft going bad in the distributor. Either way you will want to repair this right away as the distributor can be damaged and they are somewhat expensive to repair.
