i have a 82 and i am about to remove the 3:73 gears in the rearend and reinstall the stock gears 2:78, i was told that when the 3:73 gears were installed that they changed the driver gear in the tailstock of the transmission, does anyone know what color gear is in the tail stock and what color is the gear where the speedo cable goes in the transmission. what i want is to get the stock gears back in the tranny. thank you.

You'll find the speedometer drive and driven gears on the transmission's tailshaft. I'm afraid I'm not all that familiar with '82 model transmissions so I can't be of very much help in what drive/driven gear you have, but I can tell you a little more information would be helpful such as 700R4 or 4+3? Generally, if the change was not made with a ratio adapter, you remove the speedometer driven gear housing by removing the retaining clamp usually held on by a small bolt where the cable exits the trans. You can then pull the sleeve assembly out of the transmission. If this is a 700R4, I believe it uses the same gear sets that the TH400 uses. Once you have the sleeve out, you can look inside and identify the color of the drive gear(the one on the transmission output shaft. Since you'll now be holding onto the driven gear sleeve, pull out the driven gear and take note of the color and identify the tooth count. Once you know the drive and/or the driven gear tooth count, report back and we can tell you what driven gear tooth count you need to correct your speedometer reading. A note of caution, though. Be sure to have a drain pan under the driven gear sleeve since when you pull the sleeve from the transmission, you're likely to loose about a half-quart of transmission fluid.

A friend of mine is in the tranny/differential/steering box rebuilding field. You can call him to get the information on what gears you will need. He normally carries everything you will need.

Vette(s): 1968 convertible; 1980 L-82. Numbers match on both.
Your Chevrolet Parts folks have a chart available for this purpose. They ought to be able to get you the correct gear.
