Hi maybe somebody can help me with this. The speed needle keeps jerking back and forth its not steady. What would cause this?

That's what thought might be going on. How hard is it to replace the cable?

I just replaced the cable on my car and it was fairly easy.  Its under Speedometer Failure in Interior I think that would help you.

It could be the cable needs lubed, or is kinked somewhere, OR...it could mean that the speedo gear(s) are worn. Check the cable first for no kinks/sharp bends, lube it, and see how it works. Then, if it is still jumpin, you should check the condition of the two speedo gears.

While you are doing your inspection, check to make sure that the end that mounts to the tranny is in good shape and not ovaled out. I had the same symptons in my 78. Lubed it didn't work replaced the cables didn't work. Whilw I was checking the speedo gear in tranny, I noticed that the housing that mounts to the tranny was ovaled out allowing the cable to mis-align the speedo gear drive. I replaced the cable housing and all is good. Woeks like new.
