Oh man did I mess up with this post - sorry about that = the message didn't transfer - what I was wondering was if any of you could point me in the direction of where I could find what year and why the term "shark" began to be used instead of "stingray" to describe a C3

The original Maco Shark started it in the late 50s/early 60s. The '63 looked like a stingray from the top, and so the name. In keeping with that theme, "Shark" is what best describes the body shape of the '68-'82 cars, especially the '68-9 cars with the side "gills". "Stingray" also just sounds cooler, for marketing purposes.
The Stingray name was not used in '68, but was brought back in '69, and used until late '77. From that point, the Corvette had no name other than Corvette, until the ZO6 was re-introduced.
Truth is, until the C5 came out in '97, Corvettes were known as "Solid Axles"('53-'62), "Mid-Years"('63-'67), "Sharks"('68-'82), and Late Models('84-'96). Solid Axles, Mid Years, and Sharks will ALWAYS be Solid Axles, Mid Years, and Sharks, as far as I'm concerned. I accept the "C" designation for everything that comes after the Shark gen, but the C-1, C-2, C-3 designation is bogus....imho.

The stingrays are a family—Dasyatidae—of rays, cartilaginous fishes related to sharks and the best "All-American" sports car.

Notice I sed "UNTIL the ZO6 was re-introduced"...

Fact is, after the Stingray name was dropped, they have all been Corvettes, or known as C4s/C5s, etc.
