Just wondering what your opinions are. I'm the original owner of a 1970 Daytona Yellow Corvette Convertible, all original except for a black stripe I had painted on it right after I got the car. The paint is still in pretty decent shape considering the age, but it does have it's share of stress and vibration cracks. What do you guys think? I know it's only original once.

Vette(s): 1979, Targa Blue (72 Color), Pace Car rear spoiler, L88 hood, Dark blue factory interior, 525HP 406, HD 700R4, 370 gears,Steeroids, composite rear spring, TT IIs wrapped in T/A Radials.
Depends on the purpose of the car Dan. Are you keeping it all original other than the stripe and showing it as a survivor? Or are you planning to restore? Modify? Etc.

If maintaining as a survivor, I would leave it as is. If you are restoring or modifying, I would repaint. And lucky for us (NOT!!), alligatoring paint on a vette means stripping, possibly a new gel coat, sealer, etc. The paint can run from $5-10K or more depending on who, how, what, etc.
Good luck.

Dan, I would just give that old junker away and I would be glad to help you out there since I do have a garage bay open. If you consider paint get with me, you have seen mine and that total out of pocket was $1900.00 2 years ago.
But I forgot, you need to keep that C3 and put lots and lots of money into it.......and give me your C2

Tommy

Dan, first let me say, where is the pictures of this Yellow Vette? Sounds like a nice looker with the black stripe.
I have wanted to get my 73 painted for a couple of years but things just haven't worked out for it yet. The cost of such things do not help lower the amount of $$$'s being spent and no way would I be able to recoup the money but it still would be nice for a while. I do not show my car and I drive it as often as I can so I would not expect/want a show-car type paint job. It just bugs the heck out of me when I see the things that need repair in the paint department.
I am know for spending money on the car to make it a better driver and it was no-way close to being a "survivor" when I got it so maybe I will get the paint next fall.
I say if you want to get it re-painted then go for it. The car is suppose to make You happy, not what the other guys want.

I agree with Paul, my 80 is a low mileage car, just turned 20 this week. The paint is from the old St. louis plant looks great but has runs, dry spots, light see through spots and a frickin finger print where the painter put his finger in a drip spot on a front fender. It is the way they controled quality back then and I'll never change it. It is getting some eggshell cracks in areas also.
Now my red one is not original and that one will get blocked and repainted.
So your choice in the end. Let us know

Vette(s): 1982 C3 Collectors Edition 44000 miles, sat in the sun most of its life, My wife purchased it for me for Father's Day in 2007 from her girlfriend that had it for 19 years. It is on the road again. I'm retired but it is now my daily driver.
Dan
Do you know the history of the car? LOL
Wonderful to have owned it from the beginning.
I'm with most guys in that it is yours and it depends on what you want to use it for. Mine is going to be a daily driver. Keeping the 82CE colors but will paint the faders on (have a shop that has done 3 of them and does a good job). But, I'm most likely going to add more metal flake to the paint to give it more sparkle. I did that to a British racing green I had painted and it made a big difference.
Again it comes down to what you want. I have kept all of the original stuff I'm not going to use just in case the next guy wants to restore it. That will be a long time off.

I would agree with Paul also, and your last statement pretty much sums it up in my opinion, "It's only original once". My Silver Ann, as far as I can tell, is original paint. It takes a nice picture but it's thin and dull looking in areas. And I'm not afraid to drive it. The Pace car I had painted only cause a previous owner had the hood and tops of the fenders redone and they did a poor job. Low mileage car, I wish they left it alone.
It's your car but I think an original owner, original paint car has a lot more value and not just in money that other cars. I also think period correct mods, done in good taste for the time, such as the black stripe you did back in '70 don't really detract from the originality unless you plan on having it judged.
I love mint looking new paint as much as anyone but at a show I'll spend more time looking over the survivors that have managed to beat out the hands of time.

Ok...I wish my car had original paint..the guy who painted it did a worse job than GM! You got a big block original car...if it's an LS6 I wouldn't touch it!! The value of the car is higher in some circles with it being as original as it is...but it is your car and do with it as you please...they only did that color 2 years and I know there aren't many out there let alone in factory paint...I would love to see it some day as it sounds awesome!! The other car you got sounds great too!!
