For awhile now I have been trying to locate a rattle in the rear of my '79'.  It only is present when going over a bump or rough spot in the road.  I removed the spare tire and carrier...still there!  I removed the jack and handle in storage comp...still there.  I checked rear leaf, shocks, and differential components but have not found anything out of whack.  Anyone experience this?  Could it be the rear x member?Confused

Try the bushings on your struts on a 79 they would be pretty bad by now.

Body mounts, trailing arm bushings, diff mount bushings, shock bushings/attachment hardware, exhaust hangers...

I had a rattle/buzz in the '74 that drove me nuts for at least a year...turned out to be...the rubber "bumpers" for the friggin fuel door were bad!!!

I fixed one of the rattles in my car today. It had been there for a while too. It made itself very noticeable when the alignment shims fell out. Today after leaving the alignment shop, no rattles and it drives like a new car again. I was very pleased to say the least.

Now, get back there and put a wrench on anything you can get it on and check for tightness. If I had done this when I first heard the rattle in the front I would have found the problem and cured it before it got worse.

You may have to pull the wheel and check the brake shields also. If it has a bolt in it, put a wrench on it.

Let us know what you find out.

Even though is sounds like it is in the rear, it could be in the middle (tranny) or up front. Check everything.
Did you try bouncing the body up and down while listening?
