I am looking at purchasing a low mileage 82 and need some advice. Since this is the first of "new" FI cars and simlar to the 84 does the car have an ECM? If so, does it control the odometer or is the odo manual? What type of four speed auto does this car have? Is it the first of the 700R series? If so, is this also computer controlled? Sorry for the newbie questions.

Yes it does have an ECM. All electronic fuel injection cars do. All GM built V-6 and V-8 engines from 1981 have ECMs. There are some GM cars after that without ECMs, but they are actually built by someone else, or some are 4 cyl. And while 82 and 84 are similar, they are different. Memory is not sure, but the speedo and odo are probably computer operated. Check to see if there is a speedometer cable. If not, computer controlled.
As far as the trans, if it is a 4 speed automatic it would be the 700R4. Look for an overdrive indicator on the shift display.

Speedo and odometer are run by cable. If you loose the speedo cable you will get a check engine light and the torque converter will not lock up. EMC looks for some feedback from the speedo and controls the trans.

The reason for my question regarding speedo/odo is simply that I would want to pull the engine and place a crate in it with most likely a carb or TPI. If I go the carb route an ECM would not be necessary. But maybe because of the tranny connection a TPI would in fact be the thing to do. Or I look for an 80 or earlier car.

You can easily run a carb or carbs on a 1982 vette and retain converter lockup !

How's it done? I'm very interested in the 82 as the body and interior are near perfect.
