I posted earlier that I thought my passing gear wasn't kicking in, however, after verifying that it was kicking in and doing some further investigation, I discovered that the timing was waaaay off.  I had to buy a timing light since I had long since sold mine at a yard sale and am in the process of tweeking the timing.

  Chris, I've had better luck doin it Ben's way, with a vacuum gauge. Then checking with a lite. Just MHO.

I'm not familiar with that method.  Can you direct me to a link to the post or other source of information?

Not sure if this is the same as Ben's way, but...
connect a vac. gauge to the intake, say, where the fitting is behind the carb. Then, adjust the dist, until you get the highest reading on the gauge. Then check with the light.

Thanks everyone!  I found Ben's posts and Adam's Apple's post makes it even easier.  Hmmmm, now to dig out my vacuum gauge.  We moved about 15 months ago and many things, including my vacuum gauge, are still packed up as we are renting at present. 

I reset the timing yesterday took her out on the road and tested the acceleration.  Everything went fine until it backfired through the carb on one pedal to the floor evolution.  Must still have a bug in there somewhere.  I'm trying to re-educate myself as I haven't had to tune up a car with a carburetor in many years. 

BTW, Ben's mathematics made my brain sweat!

I missed Ben's post the first time around but it makes allot of sense. I am going to try it hopefully this weekend. I was planning on doing some more fine tuning/checking since I changed the springs. If it doesn't work out I can always go back to the way it was.
 
1980 L82 (5069 made), Dark Green Metalic (844 made)
Gymkhana Suspension, AM/FM/CB, Sporting a ZZ383.........
