who are the paint gurus here???need to know how to treat body in prep for paint.have got a few cracks from light impact,just showing cracks in paint.what do i do to these areas???

I Have the same problem, Have been looking for a good fiberglass person to take care of this and paint it.They are hard to find. Hope you get some good replys,I can use the info also. I can deal with the mech stuff,but paint has got me. Good luck!

It can be done several ways. I have friends in town that mainly restore C1's, C2's and some C3's.
They do different things depending on the issues. However, I do know they typically use a small sized grinder blade and cut a 45 degree wedge on both sides of the crack NOT through the glass. They also sand out about 6" beyond the sides of the cracks with a DA. They will sometimes insert a metal reinforcement rod or plate behind the cracked area setting it into glass or bondo; lastly, they apply bondo and sand as needed. They then spray self etching primers, sandable/filler primers and sand as needed!
It is not hard to do, but it is messy!
If you have stress cracks in the front or rear poly bumpers, you need to sand down all the way to the poly prior to priming and painting. I tried to get some of the surface cracks in the clear out this weekend by wet sanding with 2000 grit and soap and water solution. I then buffed the area with Meguire's Medium or Fine Cutting Compound then I buffed it again with Meguire's Machine Glaze. I was very pleased, but the rule of thumb is if you don't take down to poly, it will more than likely show up again. I don't know what year you have so that might be a moot point!

I found a guy thru our club that painted at GM and now that our plant is closed, does free lance work to get by.
I have watched him every step of the way and for my bumpers, he recommended we change them out due to some cracks being very deep under the paint.
I went with fiberglass nose and tail, which means I will have to be A LOT more careful parking, etc. It gives the '80 a much cleaner look and won't get the waves on the tail that some have.
Not much of an answer other than I trusted a pro to do it, one that over vette guys before me had used so I could look at their jobs and see proof of his work.
