Mirror button removal

Have any of you good folks out there had an occasion to remove the rearview mirror button off the windshield?

I was going to use a hammer and chisel , but then reality struck and maybe that is not such a good idea.

I need to replace my aftermarket rearview mirror. The old cheapo mirror used a special custom cheapo button. But seems the glue they used was the really good stuff.

Any help is appreciated...

I'm also very interested in replies. The previous owner, genius that he was, decided to modernize and went with a glue-on instead of the original on my '72.

Sugggest calling your local auto glass installer

A little pressure, it will pop right off. It is put on with cyclonates, (Super Glue, Zap, several names for it).

You can also take a heat gun to it. Scrape excess off with a single edge razor, very carefully. Use lacquer thinner to clean, or if you used your wife's hair dryer for a heat gun, pick up her fingernail polish remover while you are in the bathroom. It is just mild acetone.

The new mirror will glue up the same way. Use alcohol to clean spot to adhere. 80 degrees here today.

Glass shops actually pour a bit of lighter fluid on it, light the fluid and put pressure on the mount until it releases. Of course you can only do this with the windsheild out of the car.

So the hair dryer and some steady side pressure, and it will come off.

What the he--, might as well replace the interior while your replacing the mirror button,I would say the heat gun trick,it seems like the only time mine came off,in any of my cars,was on the hottest day of the year,with all the windows up open the door get in the car,and find the mirror with the button still attached,laying on the floor

Started off with a hair dryer and it did nothing.

So I got out the heat gun and after awhile that seemed to do the trick.

Thanks, RW, you just saved me some time. Heat gun it is, then. Still waist-deep in outdoor X-mas decoration to tend to before I attempt it.
