Vette(s): Gone, but not forgotten: 1974 Coupe Red, matching numbers, Black Interior, L-48 w/ 4 speed; The “Admiral”, also gone and never to be forgotten. 1994 Admiral Blue LT-1 coupe, Black Interior Automatic

I started as a corner worker with the SCCA in 1972 in southern Wisconsin, close to Road America and Blackhawk Farms. I used to love the old tub cars, Corvettes, Z28's and Boss 302s. There was nothing better in those days than the Trans_Am sedan series and AP/BP club racing (50+ cars fields at the June Sprints). even the most seasined worker would get real friendly with a big tree when the "ground pounders" came sliding through the kink at 120+mph headed to Canada Corner. While the tube frame cars of today are faster, they don't begin to have the crowd/worker appeal that the old tud cars had. If you really need a tub car fix, the historic races at Road America always feature large fields of "ground pounders". Thanks for posting the pictures, Joel..brought back some really great memories....

Vette(s): 1979, Targa Blue (72 Color), Pace Car rear spoiler, L88 hood, Dark blue factory interior, 525HP 406, HD 700R4, 370 gears,Steeroids, composite rear spring, TT IIs wrapped in T/A Radials.
Joel, this is great stuff. Growing up in an automotive family, i've grown a real affection for the nostalgia of the sport as well as spinning wrenches on something of my own. This brings back memories of my dad in the late 60s and 70s tuning circle track and drag strip cars lined up iin the driveway all day saturdays before the races. In that era, he was the "best darn garage in town". He had one friend in a C3 L88 that looked like these although he raced quarter mile...dad still turns wrenches today at the age of 77. Can't imagine what it would ever be like without him.

Thanks for this in many ways.

Joel,
Thanks for putting that up for all of us to enjoy!
The word "heritage" comes to mind. So much history with these cars!

Too cool Joel, a friend of mine, in Valley Springs, Ca. runs a Corvette restoration business for C1s,C2s and C3s. Bill Grace of "Graceway Machine", he was James Garners frame specialist. He has patents all over his office (on the walls) for the frame straightening and alignment equipment of his own invention, not to mention several pics of himself and James Garner. He's let me hang out at his shop and given me extensive tours of all his equipment. He does all facets of repairs and maintenance except paint. I'm just really proud to know him, so I had to speak up when you posted this.

Did any of these L88's ever compete in the 24 Hours of LeMans?

Not any of the Garner AIR cars, to my knowledge. There were some L88s that did do LeMans, tho, such as the one that Mike Yager has, the red "Rebel" Heinz #57 car...and the BF Goodrich #48 car...

NICE SITE JOEL. I`VE VIEWED THAT SITE MANY TIMES ALONG WITH THE OTHER LINKS. JUST A FYI. I`VE MENTIONED HERE BEFORE ABOUT THE BOOK OF L-88 RACING LEGENDS AND HISTORY THAT JUST BECAME AVAILABLE. I HAVE RECENTLY RECIEVED MY COPY AND ALTHOUGH I HAVE ONLY HAD TIME TO FLIP THROUGH IT, I FIND IT TO BE WELL DONE.CHECK BACK TO THE GENERAL DISCUSSION THREAD WHERE I POSTED THE LINK TO THE OFFICIAL SITE AND PURCHASE INFO. WELL WORTH THE MONEY. www.corvetteracinglegends.com

I have been looking for the L88 book, Bob...haven't seen it locally yet. If I can't find it before long, I guess I'll just have to order it...

Last week I watched the movie "LeMans" with Steve McQueen.

In a few shots there was a yellow C3 in the background.

This thread brought that to mind.
