Are all C3s Stingrays? I have a 79 and many people call it a Stingray but I'm not sure. What years are Sharks?

Low miles (was only 8,900 when I bought it in March 2006) - Now 54K miles. Original owner bought it as an investment for son's college expenses.

This is a pretty common question here. The "Shark" is the C3 body style used from 68 to 82. The C2 Corvettes from 63 to 67 were the original "Sting Rays" (note - two words). In 1968, the new C3 was introduced, without any additional distinction. For 1969, the new models appeared with the one word "Stingray" emblem on the sides of the front fenders. It remained there through the 1976 model year.
Those are the facts. I often get asked of my car - "is it a Stingray?" Well, yes, but so are all 74 Corvettes. The word didn't indicate any special options or features. For the years 69-76, saying "Corvette Stingray"b is actually redundant.
So, to answer your question, technically, no, not all C3s are Stingrays, but all C3s are "sharks." Bottom line - call your car what you like. In the end, it's still a Corvette! And to have a '79 with an L-82 and 4-speed!! Nice!
Glad to have you here!
I wanted a Corvette my whole life, but I never dreamed of all the wonderful people I would meet because of it!

Well put. I agree. I have a '68 and an '80. Niether are Stingrays, but both are Sharks. I had a '74 I dearly loved. She was a Stingray and a Shark.

MarshalLs rite about the topic. Here is the last conversation we had about the terminology. I think Joel (Adams' Apple) sums it up the best.

One problem with the 68 is that GM ads. about the "NEW" Corvette were refered to as the "NEW STINGRAY" Another fly in the ointment. This will never be settled. Like the El-camino. Is it a car or a truck. No clear cut answer??? zgator 2008-04-19 16:10:02

You hear how the 1967 was the last Sting-Ray (two words), and then no Sting-Ray for 1968. Then 1969 through 1976 the Stingray (one word) came back. Us guys with the 1976 like to think of them as the real last Stingray. All are Sharks.
All that really matters is you got a VETTE!
