How to anti rust the birdcage?

I've googled/ Youtubed etc about fixing the "birdcages", but haven't been able to find anything regarding anti rusting it as best as possible without pulling the whole body off?  Any tips would be greatly appreciated... I'm sure there's lots of Vette owners out there that would like to know as well?
