I am 22 years old and have just sunk alot of money into my 79 vette. I want to insure it for about $18000 - $20000 value but no one can help me simply because of my age. They can give me liability no problem but if I go comprehensive they will charge me really high premiums and they wont hold my car to that value. They say the blue book says only about $2000- $3000 it will be valued at. Collecters ins. will do it for a great rate and at the value I want but only if I am 25 years old. I will only drive this during the warm weather. Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

i had this problem when i bought my first vette (97) no one would insure me.. allstate said they would if I had my homeowners ins through them also..
car sat on the lot until i bought a house (1 month)... this probably isnt very practical for you.. but its what I was stuck doing.
Do you have another car ?? if not you wont get classic insurance easily.. i believe eric76 went through this recently.. i think safeco wound up being the answer..
or ask orangebb72 (he helped eric).. he is an insurance adjuster.. but try not to hold that against him.
and for the classic ins.. they will ask for an appraisal.. just goto a used car dealer and ask him for one.. you may need to grease his palm a little but youll get the appraisal you need.
here is the thread

Yea I drive a dodge intrepid so thats good leverage to make them help me out. I'll call safeco on monday and see if they can help me out. I was talking to most of the main stream companies. something like safeco is what I need.. alesser known company that could care and want me as a customer. AS LONG AS THEY HONOR THE COVERAGE!! LOL

I AGREE! Hagerty has been great for me, but I have a squeaky clean driving record (means I haven't been caught in a while)
and I'm 49 years old (almost as old as dirt)
. I know because of your age you might have trouble with the collector car insurance companies, and there are quite a few. I can only wish you good luck in your search. Hagerty only wanted some photos and wrote an agreed value policy for $20,000.00. They also don't like hearing about any high performance modifications.Be the first to like this post

No offense about the adjuster comment....
Yes, safeco has recently come on the radar and are trying to compete with the big boys (State Farm, Allstate, Liberty Mutual, AmFam, etc...) so they are selling a lot of paper on cars and houses. NOW, this being said, your age may be a factor, but like everything else that involves money, there are ways around this. You will more than likely have to get an appraisal, which with some greased palms is a walk in the park. Also, a AAA credit rating is also a plus. This, for some reason, makes insurance companies feel like you're less likely to file a claim.
If safeco can't help you, try American Collectors Insurance or another place to try is classicins.com
Good luck with your search and welcome to Corvette bliss

I'm having a hard time with insurance, also. I'm 56 years old, flawless driving record, have three other cars with GEICO, but look to get collector insurance on my '81 Vette to provide the protection I feel I need. GEICO will only insure for "bank loan value" which is minimal. The problem arises from the fact that we live in a townhouse and have a 3-car covered carport (not an enclosed garage). Many insurers won't write policies in Louisiana. Any suggestions?
