When I bought my vette, the headlights went up and down just fine. Immediately after I purchased the car (20 miles) the radiator blew
and the lights have been up ever since. I put in a new radiator and engine and am ready to tackle the headlight issue. There is a hiss at the switch that goes away when I turn the lights on.
Any ideas about where I should start? Thank you in advance for all of your help.

Vette(s): 1979 Black coupe. 11256 original, documented, miles on it when I bought it in April of 2000. It now has 13100 on it. Oyster interior, like new. Everything original, everything works, except the clock. Paint has a couple of minor flaws.

It's very possible that I'm wrong, but there is a vacuum line on the headlight switch, that may have come off the mounting post. It is a real pain in the butt to get to, but that sounds like a good place to start.
Good luck

My 71 hissed when I shut it off and the lights worked fine. It stopped hissing and the Light doors dont shut. The darn thing is haunted and as soon I get the magic dust (money) to spread on it I'll trace it out and with luck fix it.

Something to check just for grins - there should be an override switch somewhere that lets you pop the headlights up without turning on the lights (on my '70 it is located under the left side of the steering column). Could be that it got bumped/pulled by accident causing the headlights to stay up. If you have an owners manual it should be referenced in or near the section that discusses the functions of the headlight switch.

I ordered the guide as soon as I saw it on the home page this morning.

Vette(s): White 1975 L48 Stingray 129,000 Miles, daily driver.
Norsky is right, there is an over-ride switch under the dash, my 75 had a hiss due to rotted hoses, but pulling the over ride silenced it. I replaced the hoses and its all better. The actuator is still bad, but that's going to be fixed hopefully over christmas :)

My '76 had a hiss from the switch, where one of the lines had cracked where it was bent right off the switch. My overide is on the left side of the steering collumn also, right next to the trip milage reset knob.
Good Luck!
