Gas Fumes

I put a new tank on my 74 last week because the original tank had a hole in it. I still have a lot of fumes coming into the car. Has anyone else experienced this when replacing a tank? I looked for leaks but found none. Could it be the breather hose that connects to the top of the tank near the filler?

And your sure its coming from the tank area? Sounds like it would be sucking in from the vents which would be from your engine. Anybody know if carb tuning would affect this? I had fumes in my car before when the fuel filter sprung a leak.

I would check ALL rubber lines. they might not have a dripping leak but a small crack that the gas comes out of when under load. Check the connections near the fuel filter too.

I'm not losing gas anymore, at least not that I can see. I can smell the fumes mainly when just driving. No fumes when not running.

If you smell them while diving and not while standing still, I would look for a problem in the engine compartment

I think I have more problems. I am losing gas again. I took a quick look under the car and seen a little wet spot. Nothing under the hood is leaking. I spent most of today working on my garage. Lots of work, very little progress so far.

You say you saw a little wet spot under the back of the car or the front of it?? Sometimes its nice to find those spots when you are sitting. It makes finding the leak much easier when you have an area narrowed down to look for it. If you used new hoses you probably just have a loose connection somewhere. Seems weird though that you would smell gas when driving if it wasn't coming from the front of the car.

I still havent had time to look for the leak or fumes. Hopefully tonight.

If your car is in the garage, make sure that you have no ignition sources - heater (water heater) or otherwise! Also the fuel sender if bumped can leak where it's welded. If the car is running too rich you can smell gas. There's also the possibility (depending on your carb) that it's boiling off after shutdown (My old carb had that problem) - I'd even hear it gurgling! Check the lines on the fuel pump as they cross over and can rub / wear. Good luck. Fuel leaks are not something to ignore & put off!
