I had an old Chevelle that caught fire under the hood. Turned out to be an electrical short. Fortunately the guy behind me saw the smoke, pulled over and had a fire extinguisher. I have 3 small ABC extinguishers; one for the basement, one for the garage and one for the Vette. I hope I never have to use any of them.

I carry a 2.5lb Halotron Fire Ext in each of my vettes. Small price to pay especially if you are dealing with a fiberglass car. I have seen what a fire can do to one of these & it isn't pretty.

Vette(s): 1982 C3 Collectors Edition 44000 miles, sat in the sun most of its life, My wife purchased it for me for Father's Day in 2007 from her girlfriend that had it for 19 years. It is on the road again. I'm retired but it is now my daily driver.
I have been through a couple of Navy shipboard firefighting schools and for my money halogen fire extinguishers are the way to go.  Not in a closed area as they can kill you as well as the fire.
I have seen one put out a car fire by spraying the halogen under the front of the car the heat took the halogen up under the hood of the car and put out the engine fire.  There was no way you could have gotten the hood open so the fires would have burned the car up.  Nothing but a gas fire extinguisher could have done that as quickly and if you used dry chemical you would have had to spray it up under the hood.  I do not want to get that close to the fire.

It also has the advantage not having any clean up requirements as it is a gas.

It replaces the oxygen so the fire cannot burn. That is one of the problems with it.  It is also one of the Navy does not use them on-board ships anymore.

I would get a 2.5 pound Halogen if you can find it.  Halotron is Suppose to be 1/2 as effective in fire fighting but it is still good stuff I have heard of it but I have  never personally used it but I have Halogen.

I've use Velcro for a number of different attaching needs.  I want to keep my '68 as original as possible, however not at the price of losing it to a fire or helping others in the case of fire.

Thx for bringing this up as a oversight on my part.  I'll get a fire extinguisher before I drive it again.  At 6'3" , with limited movement space when I'm in the car, I think the recommendation to place behind the passenger seat is what I'll go with.  It will be easy to reach with my right hand and exit the car.  I'll try the Velcro before doing something more permanent.

Velcro can be purchased at your local fabric or Home Improvement store for less than $5.  The sticky adhesive back side will stick to the carpet and if you have to change it from time to time or remove for a show it is cheap enough to replace.

God  Bless, rick
