Micki, put that Q-jet in a box, send it to me.  For the price of the kit, a float and cleaner, and shipping it back, it will get rebuilt.   If I need some parts, those will cost you as well.  I could probably get a scrap one as a parts donor.   I don't have a flow bench, so the final fuel mixture, idle and fast idle will need to be set after it is put on the car. But that's all it will need.  It will be clean, but not shiny.

No matter what or who, your Q-Jet was designed by GM for your rig. McGowan doesn't have a flow bench either, he has to drive to Chicago to do his bench work, part of the slow as molasses.

I'm sure Ken will agree, the Q-Jet is "The Bomb" for your mill...

Absolutely.

When he rebuilding a a Q-Jet he installs new rods with bronze bushings, busted butterflies are no sweat to him. Just don't hold your breath waiting for it to get back home. The Quad Shop stays covered up.

I'll bet Ken has a couple of them laying around. I remember when they were a dime a dozen. I bought one for ten bucks in '77!! Now they have all but dissapeared.

I used to have several.  I actually don't have any left, but know where I can get a couple fairly easily.  It's hard to believe I used all that stuff.  Oh well, my supply line is not empty.

Way off the main thread topic.... I even forgot what it was we have been off so long.........

I have been bragging about my Q-Jet and rebuild... I fired the Silver Fox up today after sitting for a coupla months. It won't run under 1500+ RPM. I let it cool off long enough for the choke to close, cranked the idle speed adjuster in 2 full turns, lit it up and it rough idled at 1000 RPM until the choke started to open (I converted to an electric choke), then stumbled dead and again won't idle....

Any ideas???

First, the idle speed adjustor you turned, was it on the left (drivers) side of the carb?  If so. put it back where it was.   Then look on the right side down low.  That is where the fast idle adjustor is located.  It operates with a cam that has a habit of sticking if they sit for too long.  This would keep the rpm around 1500.

My guess is it was stuck, the when you make the adjustment, it unstuck, and the idle dropped way off.  If it is not longer stuck (idle 1500) and the low idle is reset, it might be fine.  

Take a look and let me know.  If it need more we will go from there.

It was the adjuster that handles the main butterflies on the driver's side. It was just temporary to see if I could get it to run with my foot off the throttle so I could get out of the car to check it out. Even with the idle cranked up it stumbled dead as soon as the choke opened 20%. It dies unless I keep "pumping" the pedal to keep the revs up.

I have a bunch of major projects thru the weekend and will dig into it next week and let you know.
