Vette(s): 1979, Just purchased. Previous owned by two individuals. Garage kept entire life. 47K Miles

Drove first farily long trip from Brooksville to Sarasota down I75 this weekend.  And hear odd noise, sounds like a an extra fan coming on and off.

Previous owner installed extra heavy fan clutch.  Is this what I'm hearing?

Thanks for the help.

Probably, Mine has the clutch/fan setup and you can hear it cutting in and out, as it's supposed to. Was your temps running OK?

YA...prolly the fan clutch kickin in/out as you drive. It should pretty much freewheel most of the time while on the road, but, it the temp of the air coming across the radiator gets to a certain point, the clutch will kick in a little, or a lot, to keep the temp in the range the clutch is set up for. It can sound like your transmission is slipping, as the rpms go up/down. As long as your engine temp is staying where it should be, it's prolly ok.

My '81 came with an electric backup fan to the primary clutch fan. Might be on '80-82 series only and maybe exclusive to A/C options, I'm not sure. Didn't even know it was there for several years.
