Desiccant bags, anybody use them?

Vette(s): 1980 L-48 still in the middle of a frame-off.

I am getting ready to cover and store the car for winter and I am looking at desiccant bags for moisture removal. If you use them do you feel that they help? Do they have an indicator on them for moisture level? Last but not least do you put any in the engine area? Thanks.

Corvettes and women are the same...You want to make love to them but they keep breaking down.

Vette(s): had a really nice one. sold it to a good friend. Purchased 2004 custom coupe in Feb. 2009 did not tell anyone here until August 2009. BAD I KNOW.

Its the stuff in the little bags that comes with everything you buy anymore that says "Do Not Eat" on them. Its made for moisture removal.

I think it's a waste of money, it's dry during the winter and if it's in a garage how much mosture is it going to see? I leave the windows open a little so air can get in. It's never had any mold or anything close to it.

Storing for a few years is another story.

I never have. I only notice moisture in the spring of the year in the garage.

By then I am getting the car down and back out on the road when the weather Gods permit.

Winter can be dry or wet here. I am going to cover the car quite well since it will be sitting outside. The plan is a tarp on the bottom, a full car cover, then a tarp on top with an additional color tarp on top to blend in a little better in the yard.

I looked at info on the net and I think it will be better to place some bags in the car just in case moisture levels get high. Last year humidity ran from 30% to 90% depending on precipitation and temps.

Similar to how I stored my black 79 for FOUR YEARS while I lived out of state. I took a large tarp, parked the car on it and and put it up on jack stands. Covered the car and then folded the tarp up and over the Vette. Taped it up with duct tape. Then I put another cover, actually a huge old heavy drapery, over the folded over tarp to help hold everything together. I hung two 8 pound bags of dessicant UNDER the car. Two years later when I checked on it, the dessicant bags were soaking wet, but the Vette was immaculate.

Took the Vette down and drove it a little, put fresh gas in and put it back up.

Dumped the dessicant bags onto a sheet of plywood to dry out in the sun and put it all back together again for another two years

The desiccant bags can be dried in a microwave, too...depending on size. They do help keep some of the moisture out of the interior when storing, but unless you "seal" the car, sorta like Mike did, you'll still get some moisture on the underside.

Someone had one of the "Car Bags" for sale recently...might be a good alternative, too...
