Attended a car show last weekend and viewed a beautiful 71-2 Chevelle 454 with Cowl induction complete with vacuum doors....very cool !!

Since I'm getting my ducks rowed up for my own restoration -modification of my 78, I became very interested in this design. I personally think the present pancake intake squished between the hood and radiator of my L82 is of an "executive" GM design.  I am currently planning to cowl induce my air supply if possible.

I am not talking about "ram" induction......just pulling air in through my hood and designing it so my vacuum doors work for cold weather start-up and at speed I don't pull in moisture along with the fresh air.

Of course I realise that the hood will have to have a complete new design...but I do have experience in fiberglass/epoxy.

Any comments/ideas on this wild idea of mine.Approve

Thanks ....Rich

Easy enough to do. Get you a hood from a '73-'75 car, and the air cleaner assembly, and put it on...done deal.
All you would need then is the wiring from the switch on the accelerator pedal...and the switch.
These hoods have cowl induction, with an electrically operated fresh-air door. The only difference between ours and the Shevelle is ours opens on the inside of the scoop, and the Shevelle opens up to the top side.

There you go again Joel.....turning something complex into something easyApproveA friend has a 73. I'll get it checked out and consider doing that.
Question. Why would GM abandon a seemingly good cowl induction system for the pancake over the radiator. That thing is really going to be in my way when I custom finish the underside of the hood...it now rubs slightlyDisapprove

The change was due to complaints about the noise when at full throttle, and the air door open. Go figure...I like the sound, meself.

I remember having a 68 Impala 300hp 350 that I kept the breather cover turned over on except in winter to get the sound!

I certainly can't think of anyone I know that has ever objected to "that" sound.Approve  Sounds like another suit & tie decision by G.M.

The Chevelle has always been one of my favorite Chev's of all time. As of recent I'm leaning towards buying a '70 SS El Camino, love the Cowl Induction hood. Look at the beauty below, especially #3.

Yeah Mark,  I know what ya mean. I spotted a 66/68 El camino in the weeds beside a run down house a few months back and procrastinated inquiring about it. I visited my son and his family the other day and on the way home I went by the old house to take another gander at the car and it was GONE !!!

I got on the other side of town (5 minutes) and saw the El Camino on a trailer leaving the Sonic Drive-in...the body looked excellent .Censored !!! He who hesitates looses.

They are very neat cars and I personally believe they will be as pricey as Vettes in another 10 years. They are starting to bring a pretty hefty price already.

Vette(s): 1980. 330 hp 350 been sitting for 3 yrs, so everything needs to be rebuilt or replaced.
I have thought about the same thing on my 80. I have a twin turbo hood from Ecklers and want to shove air in throught the turbo intakes on the hood. i'm worried about how to keep the water and dirt out.
