I tried some purple cleaner, but it wasn't Castrol. I have used WD 40 before just for the appearance but, soon afterward it seemed like dust collected all the more. I guess I need to go to the car wash more often for the engine's sake.

Years ago when I worked for a bus company I had to use the diesel to clean off the rear where the exhaust smoke left a dirty black film, it worked great. In fact we sometimes used it on the entire bus. I haven't tried it in years but, I've got a lot of diesel around (tractor, backhoe, dozer, etc.) so I'll give it a try. Thanks.

As for cleaning heavy grease and oil, Ive had great luck with GUNK Citrus gel degreaser.  It doesnt smell like the regular gunk and its thick enough to stay where you spray it.

Gunk for cleaning (I'll have to try the citrus gel; regular Gunk stinks to high heaven).

Then I use Armor All.  Of course you have to wipe it ALL off or you get spots.  Armor All on all of the hoses.  You can even spray the chrome.

Methinks WD40 would collect dust and grime.

You are right about the WD40, after I used the degreaser, it looked so bad I sprayed the entire engine compartment with WD40, and it left a really good finish. But, it attracted a lot of dust and I had to spray it again.
Since then it has only gotten dustier so, now I am wanting an easy clean finish.
Thanks,
