Does anybody have a recommendation for a decent engine cleaner. Most of the ones I try make everything look streaked and stained, they are mostly strong degreasers. I have seen some engines that looked impeccable and they must have a special cleaner or technique short of steam cleaning or a lot of work.

I cover the distributor and carb and use the car wash, then detail the compartment, and keep it that way

To get the engine clean I have always used regular Gunk. the only time I tried to use something else was simple green and shortly after my harmonic balancer spun. I think some of the degreasers damage the rubber components. To the best of my knowledge I have never had anything negitive from Gunk

I've had success using Castrol (purple container). I like to spray all the electrical connections with wd-40 then the castrol and just hose her down. Afterwards, try spraying everything (except chrome and belts)with WD-40. It leaves a long lasting shine on everything and isn't harmful or hard to get off.

WD-40 is some really good stuff!
I took mine to the car wash like "Anips" did, kept the distributor and carb covered. Worked really good with no problems.

also what I do if the engine is really greasey I take a spray bottle of deisiel fuel to the car wash, let the engine cool a bit spray the engine and suspendsion and let it sit a bit, I don't spray the exhaust manifolds, and the greese comes right off, deisiel has a detergent in it.

Arni and I used to lift weights together, its cool, car wash's in the Socialist Republic of Kalifornia have seperators, one to recycle water and one for sludge, then Arnold sends the sludge to Mexico its part of our trade agreement, we take illegal aliens and they take the sludge, I'am sure you folks in your socialist state have the same setup sept it goes to Canada,...honest..

HMMM sounds like a good idea to me. So far the Legislative Bodies in Wisconsin have not tried this.

I just changed out my water pump and thermostat, I sprayed a ton of the degreaser in the general area of my harmonic balancer and it left an awful appearance. I'm hoping I did not deteriorate much rubber. Thanks for the info.
