Vette(s): My 1974 Vette sold last August 2014. I am still willing to show up to events and local gatherings if anything happening No new vette yet.
Check online for any lemon laws that this car might fall under. do a search online thru Google and you might find other possible ways to check the title other than the dmv. Just my opinion anyways. I did the same thing when i bought my '74 too.

The owner finally replied, but with more photos of the car and the VIN number again, NOT the scanned title, surely he can't be that oblivious to what I am requesting, seem like he is still avoiding sending the (scanned) title via e-mail to me for some reason!

As was mentioned in the ChatRoom last night contact your local DMV office and see what they need to do a title search. Tell them you have the VIN for the car but the current owner is reluctant to send you a copy of the title for some unknown and see if they will work with you.
Not to pop a bubble but it could be that he has someone locally very interested in the car and just doesn't feel like putting the effort into working with someone several states away. There are plenty of cars out there so don't feel bad if this one gets away from you.

It is possible that he is in a "no-title" State. Some States do not require a Title for older vehicles...they an be sold with a Bill of Sale only. It seems the seller would have stated this if that were the case. I personally would be skeptical of this deal.

I got a scan of the title today, but it shows 0 mileage (he said the restored car has about 45,000 on it), the title also says "OD Exempt?" to the right of the owners name/address. The VIN does match what he sent me earlier, but I will still go to the DMV for more verification. Bobby G 2008-03-14 14:19:58

OD exempt simply means that the vehicle is over ten years old and the federal regulation requiring a certified odometer statement is no longer required. I do not quite understand the VIN discrepancy.

The VIN matches what the seller e-mailed me earlier, but will the DMV really be able to tell me if there is any problems or legitimacy with the title?

Few things -
A) Title are tricky, they can be washed. AZ as stated has "funny" idiosyncracies to the title
B) The car is old enough to have mandatory TMU (true miles unknown) status.
C) In 74, I believe all states required titles
D) Car fax wont help, it only goes back to 81 AND only works for collision claims. A restoration will not show up
E) I've seen GREAT cars well under the money not sell for months. How often to no reserve cars get given away at auction?
F) YOUR GUT KNOWS BEST - if you aint digging the vibe walk away. As legit seller will do ANYTHING to sell their car. Not providing proof of clear title, if it was me, I'd be looking at the next car.

The seller sent me the title via e-mail attachment, looks all legit, but I still want to run it past the local (PA) DMV for my own peace of mind. I know this is not Corvette selling season, but unless the seller is holding the car for me since I was the first serious inquiry, I don't know why it hasn't been scooped up, the car needs nothing!
