I insulated with Reflectix I got from Loew's in my cooling attempt. Although it did help somewhat, you really need to seal any holes in the firewall and if you have the kickpanel vents you should replace the foam on the butterfly door, I did this also. I bought my shut off valve at Loew's for a lot less than the prices at NAPA,,$ 6 bucks I think and painted it black.

i thought that vacuum valve between engine and heater would shut off hot water getting into the heater?? what does that vacuum valve do then if it doesn 't shut off?

I don't know Ranger, when I bought my Vette the hoses were sealed off. My wife and I decided to go for a drive in about 40 degree weather which is cold for central Fl. After 20 miles or so the car was warm enough for confort. It could be that it is not as cold here as on S.C. in January. Gene

Arthur, the valve you are speaking of is supposed to shut off the water going to the heater core but, if yours is like most, it doesnt shut it all off. I've been told that the later model C-4 valves were more efficient than the ones in our C3s but dont know that. In any case, the vacuum valve only stops the water from circulating through the heater core, it does not isolate it from heat from the water pump line transferring heat to the heater core through water in the hose by conduction. I dont know if the shut off valves are going to make much of a difference but Im willing to try it for a cooler cabin this summer.

thanks for the info.... and i am gona try a shut-off valve too... even with plenty of isolation i can feel the heat coming inside.

If I can jump in here, I have been looking at a couple of insulation products, Thermo-Tec and Dynamat. Neither is cheap.
Anyone have experience with either??
I plan to do the complete interior when I get the car painted. But that may be 18 - 24 months. Or longer. 
-- I am a little concerned about fitting expensive insulation NOW if it will have to be PULLED OUT later when the interior is redone.

Crossfire 1982 gives a good explanation of why the core gets hot even when the factory valve is restricting the water flow.
GS77Vet, have you checked for openings in your firewall? This is also a common source of cabin heat.

The factory valve only shuts off when the A/C is on. Adding 2 valves does isolate the heater. If only one valve is closed the heat will still migrate to the heater core.

I put a shut off valve to replace the vaccum valve and it cured the heat problem in our 78. got it at Napa, 5/8 inch.

I used part #601-934 from Mid-America. The cost just for front is $80.00. It works real well for me. Terry
