Can one get to the tank top build sheet (if its still there) without dismantling the car? My car is finally in route and this is the first thing I want to look for.

Not really. You can usually see if it is there by pushing down the rubber seal around the fuel filler, but need to drop the tank to have a chance of getting it out intact. That is really not THAT bad a job.

If you actually want the build sheet then yes, drop the tank. If you are curious about options you can get a copy of the original invouce from:

Vette(s): 1980 all org. with 18000 act. miles dk claret with matching interior..Eagle alloys ..loaded..excellent cond.
A few years ago I dropped the spare tire carrier on my 80 to do some spring work, and lo & behold, there was my build sheet glued to the top/front of the gas tank. Was able to retreve 98% of it. Car only had less than 18000 miles on it so it was very readable....

Hey Lb..I didn't know you could get an original invoice for a car our age..I thought that started later on like mid 70's? I found something about it on the NCRS website. I will try as I have everything but that..and the jack and tools which I am hunting for now. Be careful taking off the tank sticker as it is on there with some thick goop..mine had about a two inch diameter goop pile on it that removed with a razor blade scraper..put it in an acid free folder in a dry place. love the chrome and get some pics on here when it arrives..take a lot of pics because it only happens once!

GM Media Archive says it only has Chevrolet from 1977. I'm back to the gas tank. But I was also told there is a build sheet behind the dash somewhere. Aargh!

I don't know about the sheet behind the dash but the one on the tank is gold!

Low miles (was only 8,900 when I bought it in March 2006) - Now 54K miles. Original owner bought it as an investment for son's college expenses.
2008 Jetstream Blue Convertible
People have reported finding build sheets in the dash, under/in seats, etc, but the top of the tank is your best bet. Hope for the best, but don't get too disappointed if you don't find one there. I've heard that many cars either don't have them, or they have withered away to almost nothing.
Good luck! Let us know how it turns out

I found the Build Sheet in my car when I was replacing the carpet. Unfortunately for me, it wasn't for my car. I have also heard that you can find them under the dash and on top of the gas tank.
I have made this offer before but if anyone knows who has a 1980, VIN 1Z878AS408371, I would be more than happy to send it to you. It is in pretty good shape.
Chuck
