I'm looking for recommendations for theft deterrent/security alarm.Hopefully reasonably priced with the features most useful for us vette owners.What do you guys use? I suppose a "Club" or "Gorilla Bar" is the low tech temporary solution. |biggrin|

I've used a 12 volt fuel solenoid in the gas line ahead of the fuel pump. Also JACOBS electronics makes an ignition disabler which also doubles as a carjack device ; when taken , the car runs for 40 seconds then dies , usually in the middle of the street. Not the best place for a car to stop if its not yours !
Also have the basic remote operated alarm widely available these days from most audio/auto outlets.

Also a CLUB or GORILLA is good for visual deterance.
Nothing is foolproof , but if you can eliminate 90% of the threat , thats good. Classic car insurers usually recommend "layered" devices anyway (ie..alarm , club , fuel cutoff ; etc.) |bouncy|

Hey Jon,

I haven't done it yet myself, but plan on doing something before I put her back on the road in the spring. Not sure about systems maybe the other folks can comment on that, but I know that the best theft deterant is a kill switch.

I would find a secret place to install one.

I know I've responded with this before in other threads on alarms and such, but I'll add it again.

A previous owner had installed a combination kill switch/hood lock on "The Toy". It is a button type switch mounted under the lower left side of the dash that I push in to engage (which kills the spark and locks the hood) and then use a special key to unlock.

I don't remember finding much information stamped on the switch as to who manufactured. I take pictures of the parts and pieces of it next spring when it comes out of storage.

Something as simple as a switch on the battery post is as effective as an alarm system (especially with the ideal C3 battery location). Cliffords, Vipers and all the third and foutrh generation alarms are worhtless against anyone having better than coffee house knowledge about how they work.
The "system" I use for any of the cars I have owned has always been pulling the coil wire and using a shut off on the ground leg of the battery. The only thing it doesn't protect against is tow truck bandits |thumb|

Ya,tominator,I guess since the battery's rite there in the passenger compartment,you wouldnt need to put in a starter kill switch under the dash,but it would be alittle harder to find I guess.I should do that in my other car.I guess you could put just a flashing lite somewhere just for effect.I guess a bar on the wheel would only slow down an average guy,if you really wanted it,you could get it.I like the delayed ign. kill idea,too.Is there some kind of motion detector for when the tops are off?

I bought an alarm system from Crutchfield that includes sensors for the usual door opening, "bumping" (shock sensor), glass breaking, and motion. The motion sensor sensitivity can be adjusted so that it sets off the alarm if you insert any body part above or into the interior space of the car, or just walk up to or around it. It gives a short warning beep before it goes into full alarm mode. If you're interested, I'll look up the model number for you.
