I kind of know how you feel, I have a nearly all original '68 that I bought after about a year of searching.
I can relate to your feelings regarding historical correctness vs. modern performance/convenience.
I do agree with the posters above, it's your car and you can do what you want with it.
The best advice that I can give you is this; as you begin a project, don't be surprised when that project turns into another. I have learned that once you unbolt something that has been together for over 36 years, you usally end up fixing/replacing whatever that part was bolted to and so on and so on.
It's a labor of love.....
