New to the forum and was wondering on my 1981 that I just purchased it has a 8 track radio with CB! Is there a place to mount the handle on the console? Or should there be?  Thanks!  Tom

The clip for the CB mike would normally be mounted on the passenger side of the console, just to the right and a little bit forward of the mike as it sits in your first picture above. The face(talky part) of the mike will face the passenger door.

Thank you for the answer on location, my next quest is to get a new console trim. I see Bair's sells one, think I will call them tomorrow and see what they have.

Whats the trick in removing the console around the shifter? Looks like 4 screws around the shift boot, do they come out then it pops out. Sorry for dumb question, just want to do it right.  Thanks!

Hi Tom,

Welcome,  I've got the cassette/CB in mine.  The console has two screws under the front attaching the the bottom of the center dash brezel and two under the back attaching to the red trim pad.  Unscrew the top of the shifter to remove it with the leather still attached.

You need to remove the carpeted side panels on both side of the console to get to the screws.   There is a screw by the seat and one under the dash hiding low in the carpet and one low behind the seat

There are electrical connections for the windows, heater, defroster to unhook.

Look for a "1981 Corvette Factory Assembly Manual" for the photo's like I've attached.

A silver Testers paint maker will add the lines back on your console and eliminate all the above work.  The last photo shows my console which I did 29 years ago and have not touched it since.

PS: my microphone is kept under the passenger seat.  I have a Sony in the glove box with the wired control stalk in view on the photo.

Thank you for the information and tip about Testors! Does the actual shift knob unscrew or the chrome button on top?

The knob unscrews counterclockwise.  The button has a spring under it.

BTW, if your ash tray lid is showing “patina”..... you’ll want to replace that to match the new console.
