This thread caught my eye. I to was a 63S20 w/ASI H8 when I started my career in the military. I was stationed in Germany. I was at Ray Barracks, 3AD 1/32 Armor. Home of Elvis Presley. I miss being there.
If your car has the "batwing" differential then that would be the aluminum Dana 44. '80-'82's from what I have heard a long time ago was these were kind of a test bed for use in the C4 Corvettes. Whether it's true or not, I don't know for sure. I'm still waiting for my differential to come back from a place in Texas. I sent it out to have some mods done to it so it will be a lot stronger to handle next years "Baby LS1" swap I will be doing.
If you could get some pics of the rear end posted that would be cool.

I checked out your pics. Nice car man. Love the aluminum slot wheels.
I noticed the hood is a '80-'82 style. If it has or had a fresh air flap/door attached to the underside it would definitely be off an '82. I'm really curious to see some under carriage pics.
I also noticed the emblem on the fuel filler door is either '80 or '81 and the "corvette" emblem on the back is the '80-'82' style.

Sorry for not replying sooner.P.C. has been on the fritz of lately and a few probs on the home front.Spend a lot of time hiding under my Vette.
Yep ,I saw this also with the emblems. Was thumbing through my corvette central catalog and saw that the 80-82 emblems were the same as mine.I figured the original owner used a rear bumper from a 80's up during his rebuild after the theft recovery. As far as I can tell the hood never had a fresh air opening. As I understand the L82's for 79 came with the highrise hood and the L48's with the lower, teardrop, style.
I am starting to think that maybe it's really a 79 body setting on an 80's up frame.Done during the reassembly by the previous owner and not from the factory.Who knows?
Oh yeah! The slots
Thats what sold me.Old school all the way.

ALL of the '78-'79 hoods were the same, regardless on engine. They had the same look as the '73-'77 hoods, but without the fresh-air door & grill. '80-'82 hoods look the same, but the '82 has the ducting for the crossfire air intake.
