I thought I would post what I found. I read post on the net about this but got conflicting info. So here is what I found worked under the stock hood of my 76. I have a Edelbrock RPM (non air gap) manifold, 1/2" carb spacer so the vac port fitting in the manifold clears the accelerator pump on the secondaries, a BG Speed Demon carb and a Proform drop base air cleaner p/n 141-362. I will be using a 2-1/2" tall filter which will leave just under 1/2" of clearance at the wing nut.
For inquiring minds

Mine cleared also Glenn. See the pic in my signature. I think my lid is 2" with the drop base. I put the breather lid on the air cleaner to make up the difference. had about 1/2" clearance...
Surprised you made it with the spacer...

I wish I had the problem of a big block under my hood to struggle with these issues!!!

Big block?, shoot I am still wondering what I am going to do with all the new ponies going under the hood.
