Gents, do I need a coil spring compressor to replace the upper ball joints, or can I just jack the car up on the lower a-arm?

The upper control arm does not carry the weight, so you can safely jack the car up from the lower arm, and remove the upper ball joints. Use jack stands placed under the lower arms, right where the shocks are, to hold the car up while you're working on it.
Original ball joints are riveted, so you'll have to grind/drill the old rivets out.

Let the suspension hang to get the ball joint /steering knuckle separated. Pull the cotter pin and loosen the ball joint nut a few turns. A few whacks on the steering knuckle with a big hammer should bust it loose. THEN jack it up under the lower control arm til the tension is off the joint.
