Low miles (was only 8,900 when I bought it in March 2006) - Now 54K miles. Original owner bought it as an investment for son's college expenses.

Instead of stealing The Rook's thread on the under hood specialized mats, I'll start a new one to ask what folks out there know about custom paint jobs inder the hood.
It's my understanding that the hood insulation mat is there because the engine could get so hot, it could buble the paint on the outside of the hood. Is that true?
My preference would be to get rid of the mat and have a custom paint job done inside. If I were to do that, is there something that could be put down before the paint to protect the outside of the hood? What about the custom paint I have put on the inside? What's the danger of my 1974 L-82 engine damaging the design? I recently had my engine repainted with Chevy Orange that is supposed to stand up to heat, and I know it has baked off in a few spots.
Interested in anyone's experience or thoughts on this topic
I wanted a Corvette my whole life, but I never dreamed of all the wonderful people I would meet because of it!

Yep, '80-'82's did not have hood insulation. But I'll tell you what. After I had my car painted I noticed that the hood lost its shine compared to the rest of the car. A few years ago I put an L88 style hood on the car and it was painted with the same batch of paint as before. We did take some silver foil faced insulation cut to fit and put a border around it to finish off the edge. The paint on the hood stayed as shiny as the rest of the car now. The underside of the hood was finished and painted black and clear coated.

I apologize for not seeing this thread sooner. do you remember the Viking Mural under my hood? The artist used high temperature paint. I left four prongs under the hood for the insulation blanket so I could attach it for long runs, but that blanket marred my brand new chrome air cleaner cover going to charleston, so now I do not use it. I have seen no detremintal affects on the paint of the hood from the outside, nor on the mural. Everytime I do pull into the garage, I pop the hood and use a plastice coffee bucket to keep the hood open a little bit to assist in letting any heat escape.
Sorry that I did not answer you sooner...and what is my experience may not be typical...remember, I am just dumb-bell.
Warning: The surgeon general has declared that it is NOT unhealthy to smoke your competition AND I just discovered that my corvette is a hybred. It burns gas and rubber!

Whenever possible, I always open the hood completely after a drive and leave it that way until the engine has cooled. I have no insulation on my '80 and have never seen any evidence that the paint has diminished.

I do not have any matting or thermal barrier under the hood. When I had the car painted, the inside of the hood was painted black and clear coated (to match the car). This was done a couple of years ago and I have not noticed any problems. Although I must admit, you do now have me a little worried. To my knowledge the ’72 cars didn’t come with a mat and never occurred to me to add one, since none existed when the car came from the factory.

I have never seen or herd of engine heat boiling or bubbling paint off a hood . Personally to somehow doubt it will be an issue unless you have a few turbos under there ..

I don't know if this is related... but I know a few guys with C-2's and no insulation, they claim... when they open the hood at shows... the sun reflecting off the chrome breather will affect the paint on the opposite side of the hood. Most of them put a towel over the breather..
