Censored  Ok folks, I had to replace my lower horn contact on my '69.  Now I need to replace the steering wheel and hub which I took off as a unit.  Now, I'm tightening down the steering nut to pull on the hub.  How far down does the nut need to go?  I.e. how much should the shaft stick up from the nut?  I didn't take a picture to remember by, but my telescope locking collar doesn't seem to go far down enough.

Here's a picture of where I'm at now(I would have sworn I made this small enough!):

I can't say that I've ever torqued a steering nut....taken off hundreds though...just make sure there is a lock washer under the nut...I use my half inch ratchet but it's over two foot long so you can imagine I'm givin it a good hit.

Once the hub bottoms on the shaft, that's all it will go. Looks aboot right to me, as far as the threads sticking up in the pic.

Thanks Guys.  Between your help and help on the Corvette Forum, I have my answer--torque the nut to 25-35 lbs.  I put the answer I was looking for in here in case anyone searches the forum and finds my question.  And yes, it was about right as I took it all apart and torqued it up and it looks the same.

Jim
